Be a quick study

If you want to be viewed as a leader, you must first demonstrate that you are able to master new technical and business knowledge. You've got to perform well in the job you are in now to turn the heads of decision makers for your next move. Early in my career, volunteering to become the local expert on a new technology that our firm was adopting afforded me rich training opportunities, positioned me as the expert in our region, and bolstered my value to the business. While demonstrating my willingness and ability to learn, I also gained greater visibility with senior leaders, enhanced my credibility with my colleagues, and improved the value I was contributing to the business. Prove you want to and can excel in unfamiliar circumstances, and they just might invest in more for you!
